DIY Kids: Wonderful Watermelon – The Perfect Summer Fruit

Watermelon is a summer favorite for both kids and kids at heart! The peak season for this juicy fruit is July and August, and ends right around the time the kids go back to school in September. Start by picking a good one! Ripe watermelons are heavy and have a hollow sound when you tap on the outside. You’ll know they are sweet if they have a bright yellow field spot (that’s the area where they rested on the ground when they were still on the vine). Before you cut your watermelon, place it in a deep kitchen sink and rinse it with cold water to remove any dirt, or wipe it down with a damp paper towel or two. Then enjoy the last fruits of summer with these wonderful, kid-friendly watermelon recipes!

Watermelon Ice Pops

If you thought your kids loved watermelon before, wait until they try it frozen! This refreshing summer treat is simple to make. Just blend juicy and naturally sweet seedless watermelon cubes with a dash of fresh lime juice in a blender, pour the liquid into plastic ice pop molds, and freeze until solid. Don’t have plastic ice pop molds? Make your own using paper cups, plastic wrap and craft sticks! Once frozen, defrost the paper molds for 5 minutes or run the plastic molds under warm water for a few seconds before serving. This will help melt the outside and loosen them up, making them easier to remove from the mold, and ready to enjoy!

Grilled Honey-Glazed Watermelon

Grilling brings out the natural sweetness of watermelon in a surprising way! Start by slicing a seedless melon into 1-inch wedges, with the rind still on. Pat the melon slices with a paper towel to dry. Preheat the grill to high. Brush the melon slices with honey on both sides, and sprinkle on a pinch of sea salt. Grill over high heat until grill marks have formed and the melon is slightly softened, about 3 minutes on each side.

Watermelon Smoothie

Watermelon is fun to eat and fun to drink! Make a watermelon smoothie by blending a cup of seedless watermelon cubes with a half of a banana, ¼ cup of plain yogurt, and a few ice cubes. Puree until smooth, and serve your smoothie in a plastic cup with a thick straw for slurping!
