Serving In Style

Start with a clean table. Set out a freshly pressed tablecloth in a seasonal color or pattern, or consider placemats and chargers for a contemporary twist. Carefully set your largest plates for the main course and then the smaller salad plates on top. If you are serving soup, set the bowl on top of the plates.

Next, lay out folded napkins on the left side of the plates. You can also roll your napkins with a napkin ring for a bit of holiday flair, and place them in the center of the plates. If you can design your own kitchen, you can certainly design a napkin ring!

Set forks on the left side of the plates. For a formal place setting, the large fork should be on the inside (for the main course) and the smaller fork should be on the outside (for the appetizer or salad). Knives should be placed directly on the right side of the plates with the blades facing in. If you are serving soup, spoons should be placed next to the knives.

Glasses should go to the right, above the knives. For helpful infographics from Real Simple, click here. Presentation is all in the details, so be sure to line up the bottoms of your silverware, and only set out the silverware, plates, and glassware you will need for your meal.

Adding Festive Flair

Speaking of presentation, your holiday table should be festively dressed. Avoid family drama at the table by making one of these 18 DIY Place Cards For Your Holiday Table from House Beautiful. Place cards are not only a nice personal touch, but they also let you take control of where guests sit. Then, decorate your table DIY style with one of these 55 Thanksgiving Centerpieces from HGTV. From simple edible arrangements to pumpkins with fresh fall flowers, your table will be the best dressed this holiday season.

On Thanksgiving, you will be cooking up a storm and entertaining a house full of guests. To ease stress, set and decorate your table a few days before the big day. You should also make sure your home bar cabinetry is fully stocked, or create a beverage station from one of our portable kitchen islands and carts. Happy Thanksgiving from The RTA Store!
