Laundry piles up fast and between washing, drying, folding and ironing it takes up a ton of time. If you’re like most people, you’d gladly spend less of your day dealing with dirty clothes, so to help you out, we’re sharing five hacks that will make laundry less of a chore.
 

1. Use baskets to separate clothes.

 
Rather than keeping one huge hamper in your laundry room, store three baskets on the shelf above or below your machines. Use one for darks, one for lights, and one for delicates. This system works great because it gives you a better idea of what type of laundry is on deck, and you won’t be tempted to do a “mini” load with just a few pieces. Or combine lights and darks and end up with a rainbow of colors and lint covering your freshly cleaned clothes! Organizing dirty laundry in smaller baskets not only frees up floor space, but you’ll also end up doing a lot less loads.
 

2. Spend less time (and money) shopping for cleaning products.

 Anyone that lives in a busy household knows that laundry detergent, fabric softener and drying sheets go just about as fast as abatch of homemade cookies. Cut down on the time spent shopping for clothes cleaning products by making the ones you have last longer, or making them completely on your own. You can extend the life of your fabric softener by cutting up a sponge into thin rectangle strips and letting them soak in the bottle. Throw a strip into your wash rather than pouring the softener directly in, and get the same results with significantly less product. You can also test out DIY recipes for homemade laundry detergent, and replace your dryer sheets with a rolled up ball of aluminum foil, or dollar store dryer balls.
 

3. Install a drying rack in your laundry room.

 
Air-drying delicates keeps them looking newer, longer, but sometimes just the thought of hanging everything up on your drying rack or outside seems like a hassle. Make washing delicates more convenient by installing a drying rack right there in your laundry room. 4. Don’t make a job harder than it needs to be.

 
Sometimes we cut corners on quality to save a little money. We buy the less expensive dryer or the basic iron because of the price tag. While in the moment this might seem like the right decision, it usually doesn’t pay off in the long run. A load in that cheap dryer might take two cycles to dry instead of one, and an iron without a continuous stream of steam will make it twice as difficult to finish.
 

5. Make folding and ironing entertaining.

From watching a TV show you saved for later to listening to your favorite Pandora station, there are tons of hands-free distractions that can make folding and ironing much more entertaining. Ditch the dread of setting up your ironing board, and bring it into the living room where you can turn on your favorite program or turn up the music. There’s no rule of where you can fold or iron, and there’s definitely no shame in having a little fun while you conquer your chores.
