How To Clean & Unclog Your Kitchen Sink

A clogged sink brings everything in the kitchen to a halt. Water pools in the basin, you can smell a slight odor, and the water level may rise even higher! Although it may look unpleasant, it's best to get the clog out sooner rather than later. Unclogging a drain can be a tough and dirty job, but we have some tips from Lifehacker.com to help you quickly clear your sink and get your kitchen back in action.

1. Try A Drain Snake  —  Use a drain snake if the clog you are trying to remove is fairly small. Lifehacker.com says you can buy a ready-made drain snake or make one at home by unbending a coat hanger. Feed the snake down into the drain, hook the clog, and pull it out. You'll need to be careful though while pushing the snake into the drain. Make sure you don't cause damage to the pipes or push the clog further down.

2. Mix Baking Soda and Vinegar — To make your own homemade drain cleaner, first pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain. Next, pour half of a cup of vinegar and cover the drain so the fizz is forced down the drain. After about a minute, pour in another half cup of vinegar, covering the drain again. Let everything sit for about 15 minutes or so, then flush the drain with a gallon of boiling water. You can repeat this procedure several times for particularly tough clogs.

3. Use Commercial Drain Cleaning Products  You can buy drain cleaner from a hardware store, but you'll need to be wary of the chemicals used in the product. In some cases, harsh drain cleaners may do more harm than good according to Lifehacker.com, so these should be used as a last resort.

4. If All Else Fails, Call a Professional — If these methods don't work, it's time to call a plumber. You don't want to cause damage to your plumbing by trying an untested method.
