An area rug can make your TV room feel homier and more comfortable underfoot. It complements your flooring and fills those awkward, empty spaces between your furniture. Along with solid wood cabinetry, an area rug helps anchor the living room area of a large, open concept kitchen. It can also help transform a tiny TV room, giving the illusion of more square footage. While adding this piece of functional decor can do a lot for your TV room’s look and feel, choosing the right size for your space might not be so straightforward.
Whether part of your open concept kitchen or a room entirely of its own, here are a few tips for choosing the right rug for your TV room.
Try before you buy.
Do you want a rug that practically touches the corners of the room? Or one that simply frames your TV room furniture? There’s a good chance you have absolutely no idea — and that’s totally fine! Making any kind of major purchase for your home is a big decision. That’s why you should always try before you buy. Take some painter’s tape and use it to “sketch out” where you think you’d place your new rug on your flooring. How does it feel? Make adjustments until you get a pretty clear idea of the look you’re going for and then take measurements to help you with your search.
When in doubt, go big.
The goal of adding a rug is to bring the room together. You want your solid wood cabinetry to tie in with your sofa, and have that accent chair seem tailored made for your space. While it may sound surprising, an area rug has the power to give your TV room that cohesive look you’ve been craving. When choosing an area rug to anchor your furniture, always opt for a few extra inches. It’s much better to have a rug that is slightly oversized than one that will make your room feel chopped in half.
Base the shape on the shape of the room.
An easy way to pick an area rug is to take shape inspiration straight from the room itself. If the room is a bit more rectangular, choose a rug that is slightly longer. If the room is a perfect square, select a rug that has those same dimensions or go with a perfect circle. Also be sure to consider the scale of your furniture before making a purchase.
If you feel lost, let your furniture lead the way.
Traditionally, the front legs of your couches and accent chairs should be on the rug. This is a great choice for those with a TV room that is closed in or has one or more of its couches against a wall. To achieve this look, you’ll likely need a medium sized rug.
The second option includes all the legs of your furniture on the rug. If this is the layout you go with, you will want the rug to extend at least six inches beyond on each side. This option requires the largest rug and is best for open concept kitchen designs.
Last but not least, you could choose to center your rug below the coffee table and extend it outward to fill the surrounding flooring or negative space. Other than your coffee table, no other furniture will sit on the rug and the rug should have a “hard stop” a few inches before the front legs of your couches or side tables. For those with a small living room, a coffee table rug is an ideal solution for creating the illusion of more space.
Keep in mind that in any scenario, there should be at least 10 inches of bare floor between the edges of the area rug and the walls of the room.
