How To Throw A Spectacular, Family-Friendly Super Bowl Party

Some things just naturally go together. Bacon and eggs, thunder and lightening, and peanut butter and jelly all come to mind. And weekends aren’t the same without football. Ask any fan about this dynamic duo, and they’ll agree. Fall and winter brings a special excitement that can’t be beat, and it all culminates with Super Bowl Sunday.

But there’s another classic pairing that we forgot to mention — parents and their kids! This year, why not throw a family-friendly super bowl party that all ages can enjoy? We’ll show you how.

The Kickoff: Get kids excited for the big game by planning crafts and activities with a football theme, such as tissue paper pom-poms, paper bag footballs, and felt team flags. Or have peewee football fans gather around the kitchen table to decorate oval cookies with brown and white icing pens.

Huddle Up: Once the big game starts, you’ll need plenty of comfortable seating. If your sofa will not accommodate all your adult guests, bring in extra chairs from another room. Then designate an area nearby for the kids with a cozy picnic blanket or oversized beanbags.

Have A Game Plan: Football games tend to run long and kids tend to get antsy. This is especially true on Super Bowl Sunday, when you factor in the halftime show and all those clever commercials. Just in case, keep a few quiet toys on hand, or set kids up with age-appropriate, sports-themed movies or video games in another room.

Time-Out: Set up a buffet on your kitchen island, and have lots of snacks waiting on the sidelines for hungry guests. Festive finger foods are always a hit, and game day favorites include chicken wings, mini pizzas, sliders, pigs in a blanket, mozzarella sticks, chips and dip, and other fun, family-friendly appetizers.

Touchdown: All that cheering will make your guests work up a thirst, so keep cold drinks at the ready. If you have a deep kitchen sink, fill it with ice, and add cans of beer, wine coolers, juice boxes, bottled water, and soda pop. Or set up a drink station on a portable kitchen cart.

It’s easy to throw a family-friendly Super Bowl Party, and a whole lot of fun too — no babysitter required! But if you are worried about younger children, consider hiring an older, teen-aged sibling to help entertain and keep an eye on little ones. For older kids, teach them the rules of the game beforehand, and make sure everyone has their team colors or jerseys on for the big game.
