Keeping Mold Away from the Bathroom

The “M” Word: When Mold Attacks

The M Word!

Mold isn't something we like to think about or talk about, but it's a sneaky fungus that can easily find its way into your bathroom and kitchen. So what exactly is mold? It's a fungus that sprouts from tiny spores floating in the air making their way to moist places.

If you're in the process of building a home, you might even look into mold-resistant construction materials, most importantly drywall. In the kitchen and bathrooms, you might consider avoiding tile in places like the bathroom vanity. On a more day-to-day basis, just make sure to clean up damp areas as soon as possible, avoid storing anything that could create moisture in the kitchen cabinets, and be alert if you start to notice moldy odors.

Mildew is a type of mold that you are more likely to encounter in the bathroom, i.e. in between shower tiles or on the surface of damp walls or ceiling. In most cases, this will appear as small dark spots, and you can get rid of it by using cleaner and scrubbing. Other types of mold can pop up anywhere with moisture and can be quite invasive. The more you do to prevent mold, and the faster you treat it when you spot it, the better.

Have to Get Rid of Mold!

To prevent mold, proper ventilation in areas of your home where there could be a lot of moisture is key. Get venting appliances for spaces like the bathroom, kitchen and laundry room, and make sure that the appliances aren't producing any moisture themselves. You can purchase high quality kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities, which can be more resistant to mold, but you also want to keep your cabinets in tip-top condition.

Simply opening a window can also help to provide proper ventilation. Fans help by keeping air moving throughout your home. You can even use a moisture meter to make sure that humidity in your home stays within a safe range.
