It’s easy to install laundry room cabinetry from The RTA Store, but getting out those tricky laundry stains like fruit juice, grass, or melted crayon is not so easy. With your children home on summer break, chances are your laundry pile is getting bigger by the minute. Here are some tips for removing common summer stains from kids’ clothes in a snap.
Fruit Juice: There’s nothing like a refreshing juice box or frozen fruit juice pop on a hot summer day! For fruit juice stains, fill your stainless farmhouse sink with cold water, and soak the garment for 15-30 minutes. Wring out the garment and lightly saturate the stain with white vinegar. Let it stand for another 15-30 minutes. Machine wash with color safe bleach and repeat if necessary.
Grass: If your child plays a summer sport or simply enjoys a good game of neighborhood tag, you know grass stains are notoriously difficult to get out. Pre-treat with a stain-removal spray (or a DIY solution of equal parts white vinegar and water) as quickly as possible, and gently scrub. Machine wash in the highest temperature the fabric will allow with a standard, enzyme-based laundry detergent that lifts stains. Blood and Markers: Kids who ride bikes, scooters or skateboards are bound to get a cut elbow or skinned knee sooner or later. For blood stains, soak the garment in cold water in your stainless farmhouse sink, and machine wash as usual. If that doesn’t work, try dabbing the stain with whole milk. The protein in milk works wonders for protein-based stains like blood. The same theory holds true for markers. Since they are alcohol-based, blotting the stain with a bit of rubbing alcohol from your laundry room cabinetry usually does the trick.
Melted Crayon: If your child prefers crayons over markers, you’ll need to take a drastically different approach. When the hot summer sun melts colorful crayons onto a favorite t-shirt or romper, use a dull knife to scrape off as much of the crayon as possible, and then try this trick from Better Homes and Gardens. But first, you’ll need to gather some white paper towels, liquid dish soap, and WD-40.
Grease, Glue, and Sticker Residue: When gooey glue and sticker residue gets stuck on clothing, it’s time to pull out that blue dishwashing liquid from your laundry room cabinetry. The same stuff that is used to clean wildlife after an oil spill is also highly effective on grease stains, glue, and sticker residue. Simply rinse the fabric, lightly scrub with liquid dish soap, and wash as usual. For stuck-on sticker residue, first use a dull knife to loosen any clinging adhesive.
