3 Practical Tips When Planning A Kitchen Remodel

It’s easy to get caught up in the fancy features and luxurious designs found in magazines. But let yourself get too lost and you may find yourself right smack in the middle of a kitchen remodel that’s completely out of your league. When taking on the commitment of a kitchen remodel, it’s important to stay practical and have a clear plan in mind. Otherwise, you might go out of your mind and over your budget! Follow these tips to ensure your project stays on track — and you end up with the perfect kitchen for your home.

Tip #1: Just because it looks great somewhere doesn’t mean it’s right for your home.

There are so many factors that come into play when remodeling a kitchen, and every home is different. Don’t fall into the trap of trying to recreate a specific design just because it “looks good” in a blog you read or TV show you saw.

Let’s take an open concept kitchen, for example. This popular floor plan eliminates one or more walls of the kitchen, so that it can be merged with the dining room or TV room. The result is a more open, larger feeling space with the same square footage.

This is an awesome design — but not for every home. Picture a kitchen that is directly to the side of the front door and parallel to a hallway. Removing one of its two walls would mean you’d quite literally walk into the home and into the kitchen. Removing the second wall means you’d have a pristine view of the bedroom hallway. Unless you are prepared to completely change the entire floor plan of your home, an open concept kitchen might not be the best idea for you.

It’s important to be realistic with your remodel. Focus on practical changes that will improve the functionality and aesthetic of the room, and try to avoid designs or additions that could actually take away from your home’s look or value.

Tip #2: When in doubt, ask for help.

You have a true knack for DIY and are ready to tackle your remodel full force — but that doesn’t mean you’re an expert at all things. While installing your new solid wood cabinetry might be a breeze, plumbing might not be a task you’re ready to tackle. That’s okay! We all have different skills. Identify what yours are so you can pass off the other stuff to the right people.

Tip #3: Throw out the old rules and make your own.

The days of a single family member using the kitchen to cook are long gone. Now, the kitchen really is the heart of the home. Whether you envision baking with your kids in this kitchen or sipping wine around the kitchen island with your friends, don’t be afraid to shake up tradition for a kitchen that fits your lifestyle. If you don’t want to follow the working-triangle layout, no problem! If you’d rather have a wine cooler than extra storage in your solid wood cabinetry, go for it! The main purpose of remodeling your kitchen is to make it more functional for you and the people you love. Don’t be afraid to throw out the old rules and make a few of your own.
