4 Classic Kitchen Trends That Are Making A Comeback

This past spring, we covered Retro Kitchens that are Totally Modern. While vintage-inspired appliances, kitschy patterns, and checkered floors are right on point, here are a few more classic kitchen trends that are making a comeback.

Wet Bars

Wet bars are small home bars that, as the name implies, have the added feature of a sink with running water. Perfect for entertaining, wet bars allow glasses and pitchers to be easily rinsed, and make whipping up cocktails and cleaning up spills a breeze.

Wet bars were immensely popular in the 1970s and 80s, often found in finished basements, but are seeing a resurgence in new and unexpected places. Beautiful bar cabinets can be now be found in more prominent locations in the home, such as right off the kitchen or on a covered back patio.

Portable Carts

No room for a wet bar? No problem! Bar carts were all the rage in the 1960s (think Mad Men), and offered a tidy place for mixing up an after dinner drink or nightcap. Not only are today’s portable carts stylish, but they also have welcome additions like closed cabinet doors, towel bars, and easy-to-clean granite tops.

Backsplash Tile

While staggered stone and glass combos or metallic tile have a contemporary feel, herringbone, basket weave, hexagon and arabesque patterns are timeless yet popular kitchen trends for transitional homes.

Old-school subway tile is a traditional option, but also right on trend. Ever popular, subway tile is always a smart choice, with universal appeal that will stand the test of time. You’ll find subway tile as a natural stone backsplash or in colorful glass tiles for a modern twist. Marble is also making a comeback, and can be found in both backsplash tile and flooring.

Wallpaper

Wallpaper is back in style in a big way. This new wave of wallpaper leans towards bright colors, oversized patterns, and whimsical prints. Since bold is better, use wallpaper sparingly on an accent wall, rather than enveloping your entire kitchen in a busy pattern.
