Of all the popular kitchen trends out there, a stinky kitchen isn’t one of them. These five genius hacks can help banish bad odors and keep your home smelling fresh as a daisy!
Hack #1: Scented Blooms
It’s spring and everything is in bloom — including your kitchen! Fragrant spring flowers like roses, peonies, lilacs, lavender, daffodils, and hyacinth can add a sweet scent to your space, as well as a pop of color! Place a vase of freshly cut flowers in the center of your kitchen table, and banish bad odors all season long.
Hack #2: Simmering Potpourri
If lingering odors leave your kitchen smelling less than fresh, try this trick. In a small pot, combine 4 cups of water with fresh ginger and orange slices (including the rind). Simmer on medium low heat, replenishing the water as needed.
Other simmering potpourri ingredients to try can include:
- Lemon slices and rosemary sprigs
- Ground coffee, vanilla extract and cinnamon sticks
- Ground coffee and almond extract
- Pineapple juice (instead of water) and coconut extract
- Apple juice (instead of water), fresh cranberries and cinnamon sticks
- Lime slices and fresh mint leaves
- Fresh cranberries, orange slices and whole cloves
- Orange slices, bay leaves and vanilla extract
- Grapefruit slices, vanilla extract and rosemary sprigs
- Vanilla extract and lavender sprigs
Hack #3: Helpful Hoods
A kitchen hood is a great way to add a finished look to your kitchen, but it also serves a functional purpose. When you cook, you send smoke and smells into the air. A kitchen hood can improve the ventilation in your home, and filter out any unpleasant smells, whether you’re cooking bacon for breakfast or pan-seared fish for dinner.
Hack #4: Freshly Baked Bread
Okay, you don’t always have time to bake up some homemade bread, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use this hack to banish bad odors from your kitchen. Simply placing a couple slices of store-bought cinnamon toast will do the trick in a pinch. Nothing beats the smell of fresh baked goodies, and your nose won’t be able to tell the difference between “from-scratch” cookies and a tube of “ready-made” cookie dough from the grocery store.
Hack #5: Tucked Away Trash
Some bad odors can be banished by simply taking out the trash. In the meantime, keep things pleasant by opting for scented trash bags made of strong, odor-fighting materials (to prevent leaks and mask nasty smells).
