High ceilings make for a beautiful and spacious-feeling kitchen, but we don't always want cabinets that reach up to quite that height. Luckily, having space between the top of our kitchen cabinets and the ceiling provides a perfect decorating opportunity. If you have a certain theme going in your kitchen, this is a great opportunity to enhance it.

Items on the more decorative side include sculptures, paintings, and vases with (fake) flowers. Depending on the height and depth of your above-the-cabinet space, some of these items might work better than others. If the space is particularly deep, you might put the paintings on easels rather than on the wall space. With flowers, you might consider whether you want to change the flowers depending on the season or go with flowers such as hydrangeas or roses that feel more year-round.

This space can also be used for not only decorative, but also for storage purposes. You might choose to display or store large bowls, serving dishes, or china sets. Similar to the paintings, you can get small easels to prop up these items on top of the cabinets. You could also mix and match the decorative with the utilitarian by adding some small jars or vases of flowers in between your dishes.

For an additional decorative element, you might continue your kitchen backsplash up on the wall above the cabinets.

And of course, regardless of what you decide to put in your above-the-cabinet space, remember to dust and keep your items looking pristine.
