Home Design Inspiration From Your Favorite TV Shows

If your family gathered in the TV room for ABC’s latest installment of All in the Family Live, you probably did not get any design inspiration from the Bunker family’s 1970s kitchen. This live, prime-time tribute to classic television shows like All in the Family, Good Times and The Jeffersons, lovingly recreates those iconic TV homes. In fact,  HGTV took it a step further recently with their Very Brady Renovation of the actual home used for exterior shots on The Brady Bunch! but for those of us approaching 2020 and a brand new decade, you are probably thinking of something a little more modern when designing your own home.

If you’re creating a renovations checklist in the New Year, you can still be inspired by your favorite Television shows.

Why limit yourself to pinning magazine-quality kitchens when you can have a TV-quality kitchen? Here are a few great examples of famous TV homes to get you started.

TV Kitchens

Want to design your own kitchen to look like Mitchell and Cam’s traditional new kitchen on Modern Family, with white Shaker cabinetry and glass front doors, or the Johnson family’s modern new kitchen on Black-ish, with contemporary gray cabinets and a large kitchen island? Whenever a favorite TV show does a set redesign, it somehow makes us want to make our own renovations checklist. This is especially true for kitchens.

The kitchen is probably the most common set on TV sitcoms, and as the heart of the home, it’s where much of the action takes place. Families gather around the kitchen island in conversation. Cooking mishaps incite laughter. Meals are shared around a large table. It just makes sense, just like updating your own kitchen just makes sense. It’s the home project that offers the biggest return on investment, and it’s the one your own family will enjoy the most. Best of all, you can get a brand new kitchen without a big budget, when you opt for ready to assemble cabinets from The RTA Store.

TV Living Rooms

Another popular set on television is the living room, where people mingle on the sofa and characters drop by for a visit. Just like on Fuller House, the “door is always open.” Who can forget Monica’s purple walls on Friends (it’s Ultra Violet, Pantone’s 2018 Color of the Year), or Don Draper’s chic, Mid-Century Modern furniture on Mad Men? And what about Randall’s gorgeous living room with built in cabinetry on This is Us? These memorable spaces set the scene for memorable moments, and leave a lasting impression. In fact, Ikea recently created a whole advertising campaign around recreating famous living rooms, like Friends, The Simpsons, and even Stranger Things.
