How To Make Spring Cleaning A Family Affair

Spring is just around the corner, and along with warmer weather comes the annual tradition known as Spring Cleaning. If the thought of getting down and dirty with a dust cloth sends shivers down your spine, why not enlist some help to get the job done? Instead of tackling that long list of chores alone, make Spring Cleaning a family affair this year, with these helpful tips!

By enlisting the help of the entire family, you’ll not only make fast work of Spring Cleaning, but you’ll also be teaching your kids a valuable lesson. A recent study posted by The Washington Times found that kids who start doing chores around age 3 or 4 are more likely to become well-adjusted and successful adults. By chipping in around the house, children can develop positive character traits like empathy and responsibility, which will benefit them both now and later in life. But don’t worry! Whether your kid is 3 or 13, it’s never too late to start encouraging children help with household chores. Here’s how.

Make A List

Before you begin, create a Spring Cleaning Checklist of everything that needs to be done and consider how long each task should take. Once your list is complete, sit down as a family and decide which job is age-appropriate and fair for each family member before assigning chores. For example, big jobs like organizing kitchen cabinets and washing windows should be reserved for teens and adults, while younger kids can help with dusting and tackling toy storage. Then divide and conquer.

Make It Fun

Mary Poppins famously said, “In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. You find the fun and SNAP — the job’s a game.” Wise words from a British Nanny, albeit fictional. Make Spring Cleaning fun by adding a bit of competition, whether individually or in teams, then race to see who can finish their chores the fastest.

Make It Worthwhile

When kids contribute and complete chores, they become valuable members of the Spring Cleaning team! As team leader, show your appreciation by rewarding their hard work and a job well done. Thank everyone for chipping in and take the family out for a celebratory meal or dessert. You could even order take out and rent a family movie, or take a trip to a local park. Whatever it is, do something special. And don’t forget that you deserve a celebration too, for being such a great parent!
