How To Throw An Epic New Year’s Eve Party At Home

There’s no need to go out on New Year’s Eve when you can celebrate in style (and comfort) right at home. Forget those overrated events with their overpriced drinks and crowded dance floors. Stock up your bar room cabinetry because you’re about to ring in the New Year with an epic house party planned by The RTA Store.

Keep the guest list exclusive (and clean up to a minimum).

In The Great Gatsby, Jordan Baker said she preferred large parties because they were so intimate. Sorry, Jordan, but they are also a mess to clean up.

Rather than invite everyone you know, keep your guest list intentional and manageable. Depending on the size of your home, that may be anywhere from 10 to 30 people. Take into account how much room you have to accommodate your guests, and then make a list of family members, close friends and neighbors that you’d like to invite.

Natural Grey Shaker - The RTA StoreCurate the ultimate party playlist with your guests’ favorite songs.

Putting together a playlist that your entire guest list will like is almost impossible. Instead of spending hours trying to pick the perfect song, let your guests do the work for you.

When you send out your invites, ask your guests to RSVP with a few of their favorite songs. Use their requests to create a playlist that will keep people dancing until the ball drops.

Stock your bar room cabinetry and prepare more than enough food.

What’s worse than a party ending because the host ran out of food and drinks? Avoid this party foul by fully stocking your bar room cabinetry with enough alcohol, drinks and mixers to last until midnight.

Limit your menu to finger foods and eliminate the need for plates and utensils. Keep plenty of cocktail napkins around so your guests can easily grab a bite and go. Depending on the layout of your kitchen, you may want to set up your countertops as a serving station to put out any hot hors d'oeuvres. By keeping it buffet style, you won’t have any trouble being host and still enjoying the party.

For supplementary snacks, put out a variety of chips, crackers, raw veggies and dips for guests to enjoy throughout the night. Set an alarm on your phone for every 30 minutes or so to do a perimeter check. Make sure snack bowls haven’t been emptied and ice is still frozen.

Holiday Selfie StationDitch the overdone decorations and go with party favors and games instead.

Instead of overwhelming décor, focus on the elements that bring the fun. Party favors like hats, noise blowers and handheld signs engage guests and also make for great photo opportunities. Set up a spot in your home for a “Selfie Station” where guests can get decked out and snap pics. Games, raffles, and even piñatas have been known to liven up a party, and serve as an icebreaker for your guests to go from friends-of-friends to friends.

Stay social and share your memories.

Set up a Facebook group for your party so guests can interact rather than rely on a torturous group text. It doesn’t hurt to have a designated place for communication, and also gives attendees a place to offer up their favorites dishes or a helping hand. You can also use this Facebook group for photo sharing during and after the party. Keep the memories and fun lingering into the New Year!
