Tips For Decorating With Gray (And Why You Should)

Gray is the new black — or rather, the new neutral. A beautiful blend of both black and white, gray runs the gamut from light shades to dark, and is as versatile as it is lovely. Here are some tips for decorating with gray (and why you should)!

Tip 1: Pair gray walls with crisp white trim and cabinetry.

When paired with crisp white crown and base molding, or white wainscoting, gray goes from dreary to delightful. It doesn’t matter if your particular shade of gray is warm or cool; white absolutely pops against gray walls, from pale pebble to deep charcoal. You could also opt for white cabinets against gray walls, for a look that is simply stunning.

Tip 2: Keeps your gray light when cabinetry is dark.

Dark cabinetry is right at home in contemporary kitchens and looks especially chic with gray walls. If you opt for espresso kitchen cabinets, select a light shade of gray for the walls, such as dove, stone or steel gray. You could also paint walls a subtle color like blue or green with gray undertones, or even greige, a blend of gray and beige. Or mix and match your choices by pairing dark cabinetry with a light gray kitchen island.

Tip 3: Let gray take center stage with complimentary colors.

Gray kitchen cabinets can be a great focal point in a room, and are a unique alternative to traditional white cabinets and other neutral choices. If you go with gray cabinetry, use a complimentary color palette in your décor. Colors that go well with gray include shades of blue, yellow, pink, purple, green, or orange. Pick a color that looks nice with your particular shade of gray, and use it in fabrics, throw pillows, area rugs, dinnerware, and other accessories — even wallpaper and backsplashes! Be sure to pull pops of gray from your existing color palette for a cohesive look.

What do we love most about gray?

You can use it just about anywhere in the home, from walls and furniture, to the above-mentioned gray kitchen cabinets. Best of all, gray is timeless and trendy all at the same time, making it an excellent choice for traditional, transitional, and also contemporary homes!
