Childproofing Your Kitchen - The RTA Store

Tips & Tricks for Childproofing Your Kitchen

Childproofing a kitchen can sound overwhelming, but don't worry — you can cover all of your bases with just a few methods. For starters, it's a good idea to always know where exactly your child is when you're maneuvering around the kitchen. You want to avoid accidentally tripping over your child while carrying dishes or losing sight of what they might be getting into. If you're very busy cooking, you might also consider putting your child in a playpen.

Going Mobile

As for the times when your child is roaming, you'll want to take some precautions. Secure the wheels of your mobile kitchen cart so that it won't roll if you child pushes it. If you have a kitchen island with seating, make sure the chairs or stools are pushed in to prevent your child from climbing on them. Remove your stove knobs or get knob covers for when you aren't using the stove so that your child won't be able to play with the knobs.

Give Them Their Own Space

You spend a lot of time in the kitchen and it is rightly so that your children want to be right there beside you.  So give them a cabinet of kitchen goodies just for them to play with. You can place strap locks on kitchen drawers and cabinets to prevent your children from having easy access or potentially hurting themselves on the open cabinets or drawers.

However, if you do want your child to be able to explore and play with safe kitchenware, you might consider leaving a cabinet open with items like plastic bowls and containers. Items that your child shouldn't get into such as knives, cleaning products, and heavy pans should be securely stored inside cabinets and out of reach. And, of course, you'll want to be careful about leaving items near the edge of the counter.

Keep them Safe

The trash is another item to watch out for. To prevent your child from getting into the trash, you might either put it inside a kitchen cabinet or choose a trash bin with a child-proof latch. And lastly, only plug in your small appliances while in use. Otherwise, you'll want to cover your outlets.
