Since the start of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, it seems like certain cleaning products have been scarce or even impossible to find. Thankfully, disinfectant wipes and all-purpose sprays are easy to make at home, with a little know-how and the right supplies from your kitchen, laundry room, and bathroom cabinets. If you love a good DIY project, read on to learn more!
Disinfecting Wipes
Likely, you have noticed disinfecting wipes are currently in high-demand and consistently out of stock in stores. You also may have noticed that what little product is available is selling for sky-high prices by independent retailers on popular e-commerce sites. To make matters worse, Clorox recently announced the disinfecting wipe shortage will last until 2021, dashing our hopes for quick and easy surface cleaning come fall and winter.
Thankfully, you can DIY your own disinfecting wipes at home using paper towels or reusable cloths from your kitchen pantry cabinet, and either rubbing alcohol or bleach, two common household cleaners found in your laundry room and bathroom cabinets. For instructions and tips from Better Homes & Gardens, click here. In addition, there are other, gentler alternatives for disinfecting wipes that are also recommended for use against the coronavirus, such as thymol oil, derived from natural herbs like basil and thyme.
All-Purpose Spray Cleaner
The CDC recommends cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces daily in the home, which means you are probably going through all-purpose spray cleaner fairly quickly. So is everyone else, which is why spray cleaners, like disinfecting wipes, are in short-supply. While a solution of diluted bleach in a spray bottle will work (the CDC suggests 1/3rd cup of bleach per gallon of room temperature water), other options include hydrogen peroxide or good old soap and water, according to the Mayo Clinic.
If you’re looking to clean but not necessarily disinfect, try this Aromatic Vinegar All-Purpose Spray recipe from The Spruce, that blends essential oils with white vinegar from your kitchen pantry cabinet. Scents include lemon, lavender, peppermint, and tea tree.
