Newport White Coastal Kitchen - The RTA Store

By The Sea: How To Design A Coastal Inspired Kitchen

It’s summertime, and everyone is dreaming of lazy days at the beach. Whether you live by the sea, or just daydream about it, why not capture that serene feeling year round by designing a coastal inspired kitchen? Your home is your castle…. But it could be your sand castle! Let your kitchen be an airy oasis of soothing colors, charming seaside details, and white kitchen cabinets. We’ll show you how!

Newport White - The RTA StoreShip Shape Cabinetry

Clean white cabinetry is the perfect choice for a coastal theme, like the Newport White collection from The RTA Store. Add glass front doors for an easy, breezy airiness that would be right at home in any beach house. Open shelving is a nice touch as well, especially floating shelves made of weathered or distressed wood planks. Take advantage of these open spaces to display nautical nick-knacks, or glass jars filled with your beloved seashell collection from vacations past.

Warm And Cool Coastal Colors

Coastal kitchens are almost always light and bright. Stick with a pale, pastel color palette, and warm and cool hues taken right from nature. Popular color choices include sandy beige, sea foam green, coral pink, seagull gray, sunny yellow, and aquamarine tones. If you prefer darker walls with more contrast, Navy blue looks stunning when paired with crisp white kitchen cabinets and trim.

Footprints And Flooring

Warm sand feels wonderful on bare feet, but sadly, it’s not a suitable choice for kitchen flooring. Thankfully, tile is next best thing, and comes in a variety of colors and textures — even some that resemble sand! Tile is also water-resistant and easy to clean, but when it comes to that quintessential beach house look, hardwood takes the cake. Choose natural, light brown, or gray finishes to keep with the coastal theme.

Waves Of Weathered Wood

Beach house furniture tends to have a distressed look. Steer clear of slick or fussy styles with a glossy finish. Instead, choose classic wood furniture with a weathered, matte finish, and clean, simple lines. Painted furniture is another nice option, as well as wicker, sea grass, or rattan pieces. Wood kitchen islands and tables look especially lovely when paired with galvanized metal chairs, or wrought iron.

ShiplapWonderful Wall Treatments

Thanks to HGTV’s Fixer Upper, shiplap is super trendy, with a classic, coastal-inspired vibe. This stylish wall treatment features wood boards that fit together and slightly overlap, and was commonly used as exterior cladding before making it’s way indoors. Install shiplap on a large kitchen wall for maximum impact. Other wonderful wall treatments for a beach house kitchen include bead board, or board and batten wainscoting painted white.

Fresh Fabrics

Remember, coastal living is cool and casual. Opt for sheer linen valances, and cotton or natural fiber Roman shades, such as bamboo, on kitchen windows. Plantation shutters are also lovely in a coastal kitchen, and are perfect for letting the sunshine in. Decorate with jute area rugs, burlap table runners, or light fabric tablecloths that are machine washable and wrinkle-resistant.
