How to Clean Your Kitchen Cooktop

Any kitchen cooktop can shine, as long as you know how to clean it properly! Start by stocking pantry cabinets with cleaning supplies, or the tools to make your own, and let’s get started!

Glass / Ceramic Solid Surface

To clean a solid surface cooktop, spray the area with glass cleaner, or make your own with equal parts distilled vinegar and water. Use a microfiber cloth to wipe away the grease and grime. For stubborn stains, soak the trouble spots with glass cleaner. Using a single edge scraper, slowly and carefully scrape the area until clean, holding the blade at a 30-40 degree angle. Do not press too hard or hold the scraper at too high an angle, or you will scratch the surface. If your cooktop has lost its luster, apply a cream cleanser made specifically for your cooktop, or make your own paste with four tablespoons of baking soda and one tablespoon of distilled vinegar. Using a soft cloth, spread the cleanser across the surface of the cooktop. Dampen the cloth with clean water, and wipe clean. Using a clean, dry microfiber cloth, buff the glass until it sparkles.

Gas Grate / Electric Coil

A Clean Electric Coil StoveThe easiest way to clean the grates of a gas cooktop is to run them through the dishwasher, but check the manual for your cooktop first to make sure this is advisable for your particular model. For stubborn stains, soak the grates in warm, soapy water in a deep kitchen sink or plastic tub. Gently scrub the grates with a soft sponge if they are coated, or a scouring pad if they are uncoated, to remove cooked on crud. For electric coils, unplug the burner and remove the electric coils for cleaning. Wipe them down with a soapy sponge, avoiding the electrical connection. If soap just isn’t cutting it, make a thick paste out of four tablespoons of baking soda and one tablespoon of water, slather it on, and let it sit for a few minutes to loosen the grime. Wipe everything down again with a damp rag to remove cleaning residue, and dry thoroughly before reconnecting.

Now that your cooktop is clean as a whistle, keep the rest of your kitchen in ship shape by neatly storing cleaning supplies tucked away in kitchen cabinet organizers. After all, it’s easy to clean and be clean when everything is in its place!
