How To Prep Your Home For Summer

Beach days, starry nights, sangria, and flip-flops…. we all love summertime for different reasons. Getting your home ready for summer fun will help you make the warmer months a little more memorable. Here are some quick tips on how to prep your home for summer, from the tops of your kitchen cabinets to the floors beneath your bare feet!

Switch out décor for more seasonal pieces.

Chamomiles in a Pitcher on the Kitchen TableThere are so many easy ways to celebrate summer in your home that don’t require much effort or money. Start by removing the telltale signs of winter that are still lingering. Replace the heavy blanket you’ve been cuddling up with for a light, bright colored throw. Swap candles for vases filled with fresh flowers.

Take down heavy drapery and change it out for some sheer, breezy curtains that let more light in. Focus on the common areas, but don’t forget about bedrooms. You can brighten yours up with a new duvet cover or a couple of colorful linen throw pillows that complement your current scheme. Bathrooms can become summer ready with the addition of citrus smelling soap, a few white or light-colored hand towels, and a pretty bowl of seashells atop bathroom vanities.

Cool down to beat the summer heat.

Blasting your AC is one solution but there are other ways to keep you and your family cool in the summer. First though, you should replace the filter in your air conditioner. This will make the unit run better and improve the quality of the air in your home. Additionally, whip up some homemade ice pops using fresh, seasonal berries and yogurt or almond milk (here are a few out of the box ideas for homemade popsicles from Real Simple). Because everyone loves a healthy, refreshing snack on hot days!

Follow up spring cleaning with a summer scrub down.

If you’re planning on having guests over this summer, you’ll want to revisit your “Cleaning Check List” and get things spring sparkly again. Pay extra attention to windows (especially if you’re going to take our advice on those sheer curtains). Also, consider what small appliances may be making their first appearance of the year (like that blender or ice cream maker) and wipe them down. Now is also a great time to organize your garage or storage shed, since that shovel and salt are irrelevant these days and right now you’ll want easy access to the lawn mower, and gardening tools.

Mowing the Lawn in SummerGet ready for outdoor summer soirees.

Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day are a few of our favorite American holidays to celebrate outdoors — but really who needs a reason for a summer soiree? Make sure your backyard is barbecue ready by manicuring your lawn and trimming hedges. Bring out outdoor furniture if you’ve had it stored away, and if you have a pool — now is the time to clean it. With just a little effort you can have your home prepped for summer, inside and out, in no time.
