Preparing Your Home for An Elderly Parent

You might find that when an elderly parent moves in with you, they have a different set of needs when it comes to daily tasks. While they will, of course, be more than happy to be living with family again, there are certain preparations you can make to be sure they feel completely comfortable and safe in your home. Two areas where this will be particularly important are the kitchen and the bathroom.

In general, you'll want to make sure that there is plenty of seating and areas where they can quickly take a rest if need be. In the kitchen, we would recommend bar seating at the kitchen island or a comfortable chair in addition to the kitchen table. Bar seating is good because they are able to hold onto the counter as they sit down and get up. You might also consider adding cushions to your kitchen table seats.

Lighting is something else to consider for all spaces. It will help prevent your parent from falling if they can see everything in apt light. This is especially true in the kitchen and bathroom where there might be water or a spill that they need to avoid. Both spaces could possible use new cabinet knobs and pulls depending on your parent's hand function.

You also might think about adding safety grab bars to the bathroom by the toilet and bath. The bars might be attached to the walls, the side of the tub, or the side of the bathroom counter. One thing to make sure of is that the grab bars have a grip. Otherwise, they might not serve their purpose.

However you decide to prepare, know that making the effort is more than half the work.
