Red, White, And Blue: Patriotic Decorating Ideas For Independence Day

Americana can be seen in kitchens around the country, all year long. We’ve all walked into someone’s house and found red-and-white plaid window treatments and blue kitchen cabinets, American flags proudly displayed, or lighted star marquee lights. Incorporating touches of red, white, and blue or flag-inspired decorations are all about showing the American spirit — and with Independence Day right around the corner, now is the time we all want to honor the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Whether you are adding to a current patriotic theme or starting from scratch, we’ve got some decorating ideas that will help you celebrate the 4th of July with style.

Red and White Gingham FabricSwap out your window treatments for something that salutes the USA!

Even if you don’t have the blue kitchen cabinets, you can still have that red-and-white plaid window treatment up before Independence Day. Swapping out your window treatments for summer is probably on your to-do list anyway, and a plaid valance is both seasonal and patriotic. Not a fan of plaid? A gingham print or simple stripe will work just as well.

Add more plants to your kitchen — and some red, white, and blue!

Flowers are the perfect summer centerpiece for dining room tables and kitchen islands. Create your own patriotic planter with red, white and blue flowers. You can find geraniums in all three hues and they make great houseplants. Other blooms that also do well indoors are desert roses or kalanchoe (which can be found in red and white). For your blue, you can try blue orchids, or hydrangeas.

Bring the fireworks (safely) inside with a sparkling garland!

Another cute decoration for kitchen islands is a firework garland. Accent the edge of your island with a DIY 4th of July garland that can be made with just a few materials. Use twine as your base and close hangers or twist ties to attach your décor. You can use ribbon, tissue paper, streamers, fringe, or whatever else inspires you. There is a lot of room for creativity with a firework garland — just make sure you have lots of sparkle, shimmer, and shine!

Get the party started with some patriotic pillows!

A very low maintenance way to enhance a room for a holiday is to simply add some pillows. Whether you have a corner chair, window bench or bar stools with backs, give them a little liberty and love. You can do an assortment of red, white and blue pillows or find a nice stripe or starry pattern. If you can’t find throw pillows that you love, look for covers instead, which sometimes come in a wider variety of prints and can be more affordable.

American Flag Printable4th of July printables turn an old frame into a festive decoration!

Another quick way to get your kitchen ready for Independence Day is to pop out some colorful 4th of July printables. You’ll find lots of great options online, and this mini DIY project just requires a color printer and some picture frames. Swap out some of your current photos or use some old frames to hang your printer art on the wall. As simple as this sounds, printables are a fun and festive way to liven up your holiday theme without spending a lot of money.
