Paint Swatches

Interior Paint Colors That Increase The Value Of Your Home (And 3 To Avoid)

A fresh coat of paint is the most affordable way to spruce up a room and increase the value of your home — especially if you do the work yourself. But with so many colors to choose, it’s easy to get lost in the paint swatch shuffle. Some colors never go out of style, while others are trendy one day and gone the next. How do you know you if you are making a wise decision? And after putting in so much time and effort, will you end up regretting your choice down the road?

Wheat Color Kitchen WallsIn a new study, Zillow Digs analyzed photos of 50,000 recently sold homes and found that certain interior paint colors helped bring in higher selling prices. Homes with pale yellow or wheat-colored kitchens, light green or khaki bedrooms, light gray or dove gray living rooms, and mauve or lavender dining rooms sold for over a thousand dollars more than homes decorated with less popular colors.

These warm, neutral colors are timeless and appealing to most everyone. Is it any wonder Sherwin Williams selected “Poised Taupe” for it’s 2017 Color of the Year? A cross between cool gray and warm brown, this versatile paint color strikes a balance between the traditional and the contemporary.

While warm neutrals are a sure bet, there are some paint colors you may want to leave off of your walls. Zillow Digs also found that there are certain colors that real estate experts dread, and with good reason. These colors actually reduce the value of your home! Here are the four interior paint colors to avoid when updating your rooms.

#1 Off-White Walls

If you’ve ever browsed the paint section of your local hardware store, you know that white comes in many shades. And while white walls may seem like a safe choice, it can be bland and cold, especially in the kitchen. In fact, homes with off-white or eggshell walls actually can hurt a home’s resale value if your space lacks natural light. Instead, paint your walls a buttery shade of yellow or wheat. These colors are still light and neutral, but add a touch of warmth to your space. They also compliment almost any color of cabinetry, including white, gray, warm brown, and dark kitchen cabinets.

Light Gray Living Room Walls#2 Slate Gray Walls

Gray is a hot color in home decorating right now, and can look gorgeous on walls. But it’s best to stick with a lighter hue like dove gray when painting. Dark walls like slate gray can make a room appear small and depressing, which is probably not the look you are going for.

#3 Dark Brown Walls

Like slate gray, dark brown walls can overwhelm a room. That does not mean you have to give up on brown altogether. Choose medium paint shades with brown undertones, such as camel brown or taupe for the same warmth and elegance without going too dark.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with expressing your own personal style, so if you absolutely love a color, go for it. Now grab those paint swatches, and get painting!
